A Tale of Two Quilted Jackets

The quilted jacket trend got even bigger this year! They are truly everywhere, from vintage-inspired styles with printed designs and bindings to modern versions that subtly incorporate the quilted look to classic jacket shapes.

From a sewing perspective, pre-quilted fabrics are a big time-saver – not only is the quilting part done for you already but there’s no lining needed when sewing the coat. Lucky us, we currently carry two very cool and unique quilted fabrics perfect for jackets – the Tan Thick Quilted Cotton and Embroidered Floral – Quilted Rayon Georgette. As a fun little and season-appropriate challenge, Shale and Tina each picked one of the two fabrics and made a jacket. Here is the final outcome!

Shale's Modern Quilted Trench

Our Tan Thick Quilted Cotton is a substantial 14.6 oz/sq yd perfect for a winter coat. It’s made of two layers of midweight plainweave cottons stitched together with a polyester batting in between. Overall, it feels like an elevated and modern version of all the favorite elements of a timeless coat fabric: the classic tan color is easy to pair with everything, the simple diamond stitch pattern adds quilted texture and intrigue without being too distracting, and the crisp cotton gives the perfect structured drape.

Because of the elevated neutral aesthetic, Shale sought out to make a modern trench coat, something that alludes to the style but with a more modern shape, a nod to elements of quilting like bounded edges, and a little streetwear flare to go with her personal aesthetic. The Thompson Coat by Daughter Judy, a popular jacket from years prior, was re-introduced this year with a quilted option. The long length View was the perfect fit for this project. Shale used Lyrical’s Oyster 6W Cotton Corduroy (just sold out) for the collar and the Cream Lyocell Twill to cover the seam lines. The soft cream contrast against the tan is a distinctive detail that also feels harmonious and soothing. Overall, this jacket looks like it should be thousand dollars, literally!

Tina's Reversible Shawl Jacket

For her quilted jacket, Tina picked Lyrical’s Embroidered Floral – Quilted Rayon Georgette. At 11 oz/sq yard, the fabric is lighter than the Tan Quilted Cotton so it’s not meant for a true winter coat. This unique fabric features a beige side and a black side, embroidered by the contrast thread to display a bohemian floral pattern. The embroidery is also what stitches the three layers together (batting in between). Because the outer layers are made of lightweight rayon georgette, this quilted fabric has a less structured drape than the Tan Quilted Cotton.

To utilize the easy drape of the fabric, Tina chose to make the Daphne Jacket by Vivian Shao Chen, featuring a shawl collar with a simple yet timeless shape so the pattern of the fabric can really shine. To make the jacket fully reversible, Tina bounded all exposed edges and seams with a floral bias tape made from Multi Minibloom Rayon Challis, a fabric we carried last year. She also added two pockets to each side so both sides are truly usable. We love the pop of color in the binding that adds a little more fun to the neutral colorway of the jacket. It’s a great layer for San Francisco Fall and Winter, as it has enough ease to even wear over a sweater for colder days.

What do you think of the two makes? We love that we didn’t need to make any real modification to get the fit we wanted. May these makes inspire your own quilted jacket projects!
